About us

Fostering democracy and upholding human rights, taking action to prevent the destruction of the global ecosystem, advancing equality between women and men, securing peace through conflict prevention in crisis zones, and defending the freedom of individuals against excessive state and economic power – these are the objectives that drive the ideas and actions of the Heinrich Böll Foundation.

We maintain close ties to the German Green Party (Alliance 90/The Greens) and as a think tank for green visions and projects, we are part of an international network encompassing well over 100 partner projects in approximately 60 countries.

We cooperate with parter organizations and individuals on initiatives to advance democracy, human rights, land defense, energy transition and gender democracy.

Mazateca women for liberty

Since December 2014, more than forty people from the Mazatec community of Eloxochitlán de Flores Magón, Oaxaca, have been persecuted and/or detained on trumped-up charges, without conclusive evidence, and subjected to legal proceedings that violate due process. Torture and ill-treatment have been used. The families have worked tirelessly to seek justice and peace. Women are at the forefront of this struggle.

The solar engineers

The perspectives of justice, gender, and intersectionality offer a critical view of dominant discourses and actions and, in their place, propose transformative measures. It is not enough to change energy sources if the political, economic, and cultural structures that perpetuate inequality, discrimination, and exclusion remain intact. A just energy transition requires rethinking the ways we produce and consume, as well as our relationships with nature and with one another.

It is about imagining and building a future where energy is not a market commodity, but a right linked to dignity, equality, and the care of life. It is within this vision that feminist, environmental, and community struggles converge.

An eco-social and anti-patriarchal energy transition

This report compiles the approach, experiences, and reflections that emerged from four discussion groups held with women from organized civil society, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), collectives, academia, and independent professionals (e.g., consultants), as well as all those who, with varying levels of theoretical and technical expertise on the subject, wished to participate and contribute.
